Founding Engineer
About
About Quill
Quill is building an agent system for data reliability. Companies rely on systems of record like CRMs and ERPs for reporting, managing their business, and running sales, but those systems have messy data regardless of company size. In the age of AI, the problem is getting worse as random AI tools and agents write data everywhere. Quill solves this by restructuring and linking data into a company graph that agents can operate on reliably, then uses an agent system to clean up data autonomously and provide governed, secure workflows for human-in-the-loop data curation. The team just raised $4.5M in pre-seed funding and has initial design partners actively using the platform daily.
About the role
High-ownership founding engineer role working directly with the founders on product vision and implementation. You'll be one of the first engineering hires at a company with real traction, design partners are already using the product daily. Your primary responsibility is building the product, but right now that means talking directly to customers, understanding their needs, building solutions around those problems, and iterating based on their feedback. This is product-driven engineering where customer obsession and execution velocity directly drive the company's growth.
What you'll own
- Own end-to-end product development, from design through production, shipping features that directly solve customer problems
- Talk directly to design partners to understand their data challenges, document their requirements, and validate solutions
- Build core infrastructure and backend systems that power the agent system and data-reliability platform
- Design and implement the data restructuring and linking logic that creates the company graph agents operate on
- Iterate rapidly based on customer feedback, monitoring usage patterns and adjusting the product roadmap accordingly
- Ship production code with high standards for reliability and correctness; the system handles sensitive business data
Requirements
Must-have
- Ambition and demonstrated hunger to learn and grow, even if early in your career; we value raw intelligence and drive over years on paper
- AI-native mindset: comfortable using Claude, Cursor, or equivalent tools daily, and actively staying on the bleeding edge of what's possible with AI
- Shipped production code or built meaningful projects; track record of taking ideas end-to-end from design to working software
- Full-stack leaning backend; backend depth is essential, but if you're mostly backend with some frontend exposure and strong product intuition, you're a good fit
- Willingness to talk to customers and translate their problems into engineering solutions; comfort with ambiguity and changing requirements
- 1 to 5 years of experience, or exceptional new grads from top schools (Waterloo, top 20 US universities) with demonstrated ability to learn and execute fast
Nice-to-have
- Undergraduate degree from a top-20 US university or Waterloo
- Experience at companies with high hiring bars like Palantir, Scale.ai , Stripe, Notion, Figma, Robinhood, Airtable, or Rippling
- Started a company or were a founding engineer at a startup; you know what it takes to build from scratch
- Side projects or personal code shipped to real users; demonstrates self-direction and execution outside of day-job work
- Experience with data pipelines, systems design, or working on problems at scale
