(PT Contractor) Building Efficiency Engineer
Cambio is a software platform for world-class real estate decarbonization. We help commercial real estate owners and tenants bring their real estate portfolios to net-zero using a machine learning-driven, end-to-end real estate sustainability platform. Our mission is to take the real estate industry into the climate action era.
We are proud to be the fastest growing startup in our category, with world-class partners and investors including Y Combinator, Google, the U.S. Department of Energy, Stanford University and Fifth Wall. We are seeking team members who are passionate about building transformative products, enthusiastic about problem-solving, and excited to work at the forefront of climate and real estate technology. Join us on our mission to achieve net zero by 2050.
We're looking for a part-time Building Engineer contractor to join our Building Engineering team.
This is a remote, flexible role well-suited for an experienced building engineer who wants to do meaningful technical work.
What You'll Do
You'll run end-to-end retrofit analyses on commercial properties using Cambio's proprietary toolset, contributing directly to the decarbonization plans we deliver to our customers. Day-to-day, this includes:
Executing BSE (Building Science Engine) workflow analyses on assigned properties — reviewing PCA reports, utility data, equipment inventories, and site visit notes to configure and run each analysis
Reviewing ML-generated ECMs (Energy Conservation Measures) for completeness, cost accuracy, and defensibility — correcting scope, energy savings estimates, and customer-facing comments as needed
Integrating PCA-sourced ECMs where applicable and applying cost override workflows with documented rationale
Participating in QA review — responding to flags with inline comments, escalating non-standard assumptions, and ensuring nothing is published without sign-off
Keeping your RABL (Retrofit Analytics Building Log) tickets current — logging overrides, blockers, and status updates as analysis progresses
Reporting BSE bugs and tooling feedback through established channels to help improve platform quality
What We're Looking For
Background in mechanical, electrical, or building engineering — familiarity with commercial HVAC systems, energy audits, and PCAs strongly preferred
Comfort working within proprietary software toolsets and structured workflows
Strong attention to detail and engineering judgment — you'll be making calls on ECM scope and cost that end up in front of customers
Ability to work independently, flag blockers early, and communicate clearly in a remote async environment
Prior experience with building energy modeling, retrofit analysis, or sustainability consulting is a plus
The Details
Type: Part-time independent contractor; possibility for FT conversion dependent on location
Location: Fully remote in Canada or US
Hours: 10-20 hours per week
Deliverables-based: Work is scoped per property with clear acceptance criteria
